Introduction and Pure type music

Introduction

This music typing system borrows from Pokémon types and adds some extra ones to make there 24 types altogether. The 18 Pokémon types are joined by six other types of my own invention. These new types are light, oil, poly, space, ceramic and glass. Additionally, the types 'ground' and 'flying' are replaced with 'earth' and 'air' for being the names of the original elements.

It is possible that Pokémon creators may add other types that are not those six extras that I have added above, and if that is the case then I might adjust them to delete one of them and replace it with the new type. Or I may ignore their new type and not change anything. I am unpredictable and prefer to react to things for adaptability.

Anyway, here is a description of the pure type music, with some examples.

Pure fire type

Often fire type music will often generate warmth via soothing guitars, but to be pure fire it must also contain its destructive element. Pure fire type music is extremely rare and hard to find, even more so than most primary fire types. So far, this is currently the only song I know that would count as pure fire type:-

Blue Bell Knoll (Cocteau Twins).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcH2iy3HO2A

Pure dark type

The most salient quality of dark type music is a quality of sadness or badness. Its other side represents the generic idea of the "bad guy", which can add a touch of "badass" at times. Pure dark type music is again quite rare. A good example would be this track:-

Legion (VNV Nation).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGALJwdBOX4

Pure fighting type

Fighting type music is characterised by sounding violent or brawly. After all, fighting does involve violence. A pure fighting type music track however is extremely rare, just like pure fire. Again, I will have to give you an example without lyrics:-

Iron Fist (Frank Klepacki).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eqK0XZQZ4Fo

Pure earth type

An easy way to tell earth type music is by its consistent regular beats. This is what primarily distinguishes it from regular rock or pop music. Then you can appreciate the ground-quality of the music. An excellent example would be this song, which many would offhandedly class as "rock" or "new romance", but if you listen carefully, it's extremely pure earth type:-

The Thin Wall (Ultravox).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2zG7D2DqXs

Pure electric type

This music is usually anything that sounds excessively electronic or robotised. So an obvious example of pure electric music is this track:-

The Robots (Kraftwerk).
YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/-wop47G2qeY

Pure ceramic type

Ceramic type represents classical or ceremonious sounding music. While this is extremely rare among modern music (mainly Karl Jenkins), it was historically the most prominent type of music. Many classical tracks have secondary types, but there are plenty of pure ceramic examples, such as this:-

Symphony in F major, K. Anh. 223 (19a): II. Andante (W. A. Mozart).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBiYIGIZmTQ

Pure oil type

This type of song represents being very smooth and slick. Oil type music is often overly laid back. While there are quite a few very cool examples with oil as a primary type, pure oil is so extremely rare that I couldn't find an example without lyrics and had to settle for an example from the Sonic game series:-

Dilapidated Way (Sonic Team).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JVjst_c2-x8

Pure bug type

The bug type is usually characterised by weirdness and an overt parody quality in the instrumentation used. Bug type music can be an excellent formula for music tracks when combined with other types, as you will see from the combination posts, but pure bug type is another extremely difficult one to find. Pure bug type may sound alien-like or may even be intentionally about bugs. Here is my best example:-

Earwigs in my Brain (The Meteors).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0owEXccBwUY

Pure grass type

Any music with this quality combined with other types has a very cosy or beautiful quality. It can include Swing music too. If combined with the normal type, it would usually make Country music. Pure grass type is again very rare and often child-like. However this is a great example:-

Strawberry Swing (Coldplay).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3pJZSTQqIg

Pure poly type

Poly type tracks are defined by their use of variety and evasiveness to being typed. A track will probably have poly as a secondary type if it's a song with a central theme exploring different aspects of one type, or will have poly as their primary type if the variation of themes is itself more central to the track. As you can imagine, if there is a pure poly track then there is so much variation and randomness that it can't be attributed to anything (other than the poly type). You would think this is virtually impossible to find. However, there are a couple of pure poly type tracks that I have come across, so you can give one a listen:-

New Dimensions in Sound (Public Service Broadcasting).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfaTd79Ew7A

Pure rock type

Rock type tracks are everywhere, and are very abundant. The usual definition of "rock music" usually falls into this type, just because it's easy to identify and quite common. This gives us quite a number of possible tracks to choose from. One of the most solid pure rock types I know is this:-

Beginning of the End (Status Quo).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6lKkUXj2C4

Pure glass type

Primary glass types are characterised by their clarity, while secondary glass is "bitty" (which includes 8-bit but is not exclusively like that). It's quite a common combination type, rather than standing alone, so pure glass is hard to find. A truly pure glass type would be like this:-

On Parade (from 'Ristar').
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eGcIRLdLEY

Pure ice type

Ice types often sound cold or snowy. When combined with certain other types (for example grass, fairy, rock or normal), they might make good Christmas themes. A pure ice type would just have to be an icy song about ice, like this:-

Lady of Ice (Fancy).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCkazYs5CIU

Pure steel type

The steel type contains anything from the "metal" genre in mainstream music. Very often, this is combined with the rock type in some way, though. A pure steel type would be more like a metal song that seems to be about metal. Example:-

Iron Man (Black Sabbath).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5s7_WbiR79E

Pure air type

A type that produces feelings of elation or sky quality. This is most often combined with other types and again very difficult to find on its own outside of computer games. However, Pink Floyd managed to make an obvious one:-

Learning to Fly (Pink Floyd).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVhNCTH8pDs

Pure space type

Space type music literally contains a lot of space (in the form of silence). Specific examples are hard to find, although some "pop" music comes close when it seems to feel very empty. Pure space music is similar to poly in that it usually borrows some stuff randomly from other types, but makes a type in itself. An example would be some generic space music:-

Generic Space Music.
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVGb7JU4TSU

Pure water type

The water type creates a flowing sensation in music and is often used as a combination type for this purpose, thus making pure water types very rare. This doesn't stop computer games from making some though. Apart from computer games, the Stranglers managed to scrape into the pure water type with this example:-

¡Viva Vlad! (The Stranglers).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3qTu-1ukxk

Pure dragon type

Dragon types are sometimes confused with ceramic types in the same way that rock and steel can be. The main quality of the dragon type is pure epicness, although pure dragon type is often used by military bands. A good example would be this:-

Farewell of Slavianka (Red Army Choir).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqFISER9fVE

Pure ghost type

Ghost types often add a spooky or scary quality when combined with other types. An awesome example of pure ghost type is here:-

Vladimir and Olga (The Stranglers).

YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YGoSNOW6fM

Pure poison type

Poison type tracks have an obvious bad side - the are the songs that tell you that this is a dystopian society or trick you into thinking destructive and self-destructive behaviour (like drugs) is good, thus poisoning your mind. Most often rap falls into this type. They are songs that may be literally toxic to listen to. An example of the pure poison type that ticks all the boxes is this:-

In Da Club (50 Cents).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5qm8PH4xAss

Pure normal type

These are usually the normal "pop music" types. Artists often try to be original by combining this with other types. Usually these are relatively mild songs about life, suitable for children, unlike the poison type which can be very toxic. An example of the pure normal type would be this:-

Always On my Mind (Brenda Lee).

Pure fairy type

The combination of overly happy (primary fairy) with a mystical or magical quality (secondary fairy) would be characteristic of pure fairy types. Fairy types often shine the brightest, but burn themselves out very quickly (unlike light types). Some types of "bubblegum music" are primary fairy types, but it can take some still to combine it with a secondary fairy type. Here is a great example, partly because it sounds like it says "Tinkerbell":-

Take a Bow (Leona Lewis).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9ztc7UW_B8

Pure psychic type

The psychic type often sounds like a type of trance or hypnotic music. An example of pure psychic type music would be this:

Growing On Me (Snayk).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_b3WiAH2Nk

Pure light type

The light type generates shining joy. Often confused with the fairy type, although it's more of a bliss rather than ecstasy. It is also based on realism and truth (rather than idealism and fantasy), and doesn't burn out quickly. The light type shines like the stars - for a long time. Of course, it can be combined with any other type (including fairy, dark or poison) for interesting musical effects. Pure light types are also quite difficult to find, but one sure example is this:-

Yasashisa Ni Tsutsumarata Nara (Studio Ghibli).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2iVQmdWBbwo

Type combinations

Overall there are 576 possible combinations of music (24x24), some of which are very interesting. They also depend on which one is their primary type and secondary type, so for example the interesting combination of "dark light" is different to the combination of "light dark". Examples of combinations will be in the other posts on this blog.

Light type combinations

Examples of type combination songs with light as their primary type

Light fire

Quite a specialised combination which is hardly used or explored at all. Examples:-

Route 225 (TPCi).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=br6oUG6a0jQ

Light dark

One of the most contradictory combinations. This way round, it means light / shiny music with a dark / badass subject. There are some great examples:-

Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Tears for Fears).
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGCdLKXNF3w&t=35

2Shy (Shura).

Light fighting

This combination is possibly the most intense (literally) and also contains some songs which can induce "battle trance" if listened to. Additionally, it is so hyper effective against sadness or darkness that it can easily wipe out the deepest of despair. Examples:-

Light ceramic

This includes lots of Scottish Ceilidh music (when done with the correct instruments), but other aspects of this combination have been much less explored. I have included only two examples here to show the possible diversity it could contain:-

In the Night Garden Theme.
YouTube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ5ku4z1pjs&t=49

Light oil

One of the most relaxing. In terms of competition, this is the best defensive combination (as well as oil light), since it is immune to many other types of music.
